Time Management Tips for Law Students

Be Consistent. Better to give one hour every day than to try to do a seven hour Sunday and nothing all week. Do not plan on just cramming for finals; prepare all semester.

Schedule your studies. Write out a study plan at the beginning of every month of the semester, and stick to it. Try to plan in at least 3 hours prep time for each hour of class. Plan in time to write practice exams.

Study during your most productive hours. Don't try to do practice tests or read cases when you are already burned out. They are complicated. Make your active study hours when you are the most awake, alert. Consider getting up an hour earlier and study before work, rather than trying to study after a full day of work. Review notes, flashcards or read treatises (that summarize the law for you) at night. Better still, take off time when you are tired, to exercise, plan and prepare healthy meals, and take care of yourself and your family.

Be flexibile. If your study plan isn't working (i.e. you are not learning what you need to), change it.

Focus. Limit time spent on other things in your life in order to make more time for studying. Ask yourself what you can give up, and give up some other things. The study of law is a full time endeavor, even if you are doing it part time.

Capture wasted time. Use "down" time such as commute time. For example, make tapes of yourself reading rules statements, case summaries, and listen to them in the car. Write flashcards and have family or friends help quiz you. Form study groups with classmates and talk cases over lunch or dinner so that you can combine studying with a meal.
